Tamara Beryl Latham - The Poet

Checkmate

Within these squares of ivory and black,

I’ve roamed defenseless seeking your demise,

and charted clear the course of my attack,

where armies of the world have trod and died.

As queen the squares of ebony direct

my path to override your ruthless plot.

How is it that your pawns stand so erect?

And why do you have all that I have not?

Your queen now falls, soon followed by your knight.

The battle’s sorely fought from dusk ‘til dawn.

Your bishops have laid down their wretched lives.

Now all that stands to guard you are your pawns.

Yet, why is it your pawns appear to lag,

behind two lonely castles looming tall?

My armored knight has countered their attack,

and it appears that even they must fall.

While I march on with truth:  an honest sword.

I find you trapped, the spoils of war and hate.

With flag in hand, I strike the checkered board.

Off with your head!  More civilly…checkmate.
